The Social Index for Schools NRW was developed in 2020 by Jörg-Peter Schräpler and Sebastian Jeworutzki on behalf of the Ministry of School and Education of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (MSB NRW), in partnership with the Quality and Support Agency - State Institute for Schools (QUA-LiS NRW). It was first utilized by the state government for resource management in 2021.

The study, led by Professor Dr. Jörg-Peter Schräpler and supported by the Mercator Foundation, investigates, for the first time on a widespread small-scale level, the impact of economic and demographic structural changes in neighborhoods on the educational and participatory opportunities of residents.

Within the framework of the consortium project "Schule macht stark" (SchuMaS) - which translates to "Empowering Schools", funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, 13 scientific institutions and universities collaborate with 200 schools nationwide locatedin challenging areas. The overarching goal is to break down educational barriers for socially disadvantaged students.
